Christmas Message Fr Laurence Freeman, December 2009 New

My dearest friends:
And along with the Angel suddenly appeared a multitude of the heavenly host praising God (Luke 2:13) According to a tradition Jewish, when the angels saw the work God had done with the building began to sing praises that followed through the ages in the heart of all things. The story of the birth of Jesus cosmic provoking another outburst after the pastors know the good news reminds us that similar and different is the new creation in Christ.

Similarly the mantra sung in our hearts the epiphany of his birth in us. The gospel story of the birth and childhood of Jesus contains a number of chants - Zechariah's Benedictus, the Magnificat of Mary and the Song of Simeon - who have become part of daily prayer of Christians. These human acts of worship were probably composed in the early Christian community as reflected on the mystery of Jesus and gradually penetrated its depths. Were applied retrospectively in the Gospel of Luke to the later accounts of his birth. This pattern shows such as prayer, liturgy and scripture are woven into the tradition of faith and to the density of meaning to which we return each year in celebration of Christmas.

human beings tell stories to find the meaning we need to live well. The stories of Scripture are different from the novels and even literary fiction to entertain us. The narratives of Scripture, such as the birth of Jesus, discover more great events for us each time we remember, because they are newly interwoven with the stories of our own lives. Our deep spiritual experience, heightened awareness and clearer result of our meditation, it feeds on the Word is alive and active. It also brings us back to the Scriptures with new hunger and new level of understanding. Christmas is a celebration of meaning. Much of this is reflected in our cultural ways of celebrating this time of year, the exchange of gifts reminds us that human relationships are based on giving and do not haggle or exploit, in reunions of families and friends who remind us that we are not alone in the solitude of the human journey, the food and drink that remind us that the celebrations are natural and necessary. But all this depends on personal experience of the essential meaning of Christmas - the dramatic poverty and simplicity, the intoxicating closeness to God that reveals our total dependence to be. The closer we get to this radical simplicity - to our meditation which leads us continually, we will have to sing more praises. The song is fuller, richer the silence.

Keep it together in our hearts as a community during this happy season. Our understanding of this new creation we return the love of the land needed to repair the damage they have inflicted. Our life as a community to increase the energy of peace by fighting our divided world, as well as the justice of the peace depends on - the very wisdom that embodies the newborn Jesus. On December 30, Retreat Center in London held the gift of John Main to the world in the 27th anniversary of its entry into the light of Christ. The site
( http://www.wccm.org/ ) will remember him simply as suggestions for some of you would like to do at this time in meditation groups.

Sincerely,

Laurence Freeman OSB
