Second Life falls to lowest level in two years

user concurrency in Second Life is at its lowest in two years, according to Tateru Nino , with the average currently around 52,000, where it used to be closer to 58,000 in the same period last year, and below the peak of almost 70,000, in June 2009.

Declining attendance is worrying for the future of Second Life, especially the long-term decline. That means the economy (And hence the profitability of Linden Lab, and its ability to keep the service open in the long term) and a general degradation of the user experience.

However, as pointed out by Wagner James Au of New World Notes , competition is not the only metric for user activity. At least as important is the repetition of a month login returning users. In this respect there is a slight increase - under 750K in 2009, according to Linden Lab, but close to 800K, in late 2010.

Two bittersweet data reflect the confusion about the future of Second Life.
